This was a historic day for Hawai`i and, hopefully, the start of real justice reform.
The Governor spoke briefly before a packed conference room and said that these bills, SB 2776 and HB 2515, represent a start and new thinking about how we address crime in our communities. He thanked the judiciary and the legislature for working with the executive branch on the justice reinvestment working group to achieve this historic collaboration.
The Governor went on to say that he hopes to restore judicial discretion (getting rid of mandatory sentencing) as we move forward. Wouldn’t that be awesome?
Mahalo to all who testified in support of these measures. We still have plenty work to do and we need your help!
