The Prison Writing Project, celebrating ten years of classes and the publication of eight books of prison writing, is one example of a comprehensive program meeting the needs of trauma survivors. Founder and volunteer teacher, Pat Clough, conducts her classes like a college level course, with the women discussing poetry and themes in literature, exploring the power and subtlety of words. Clough challenges her students’ thinking skills through personal reflection, guiding them to terms with the circumstances that led them to prison. Through Prison Monologues, inmate writers are making their voices heard in Hawai‘i communities, striving to interrupt the cycle of self destruction that leads so many women and young people to prison.
