Aloha Justice Adovcates! I just got this and wanted to share it with you.
I also just wrote to the analysts at CSG asking to be notified of the upcoming meetings so we could notify the community to attend…AAARRRGGGHHH!
Community Alliance on Prisons introduced Hawai`i to JRI and drafted the proposal that won the state CSG’s invaluable assistance. One of the criticisms of JRI is that it is too top down. I truly believe that many of the barriers we encountered during the initial bills were because the Steering Committee is composed of the same folks who have been around the same table for 25 years. None of the researchers, advocates, scholars, families, formerly incarcerated persons were/are included in these discussions.
I am disappointed at the glacial pace at which Hawai`i is moving and wish that the Steering Committee actually believed that the community, researchers and scholars actually have value to add to a more favorable outcome.
In the future, I would like to be notified of upcoming meetings.
States are not moral agents, people are,
and can impose moral standards on powerful institutions.
