SUPPORT for SB1020 ELECTRONIC MONITORING; DPS; JUDICIARY; APPROPRIATION ($)                       PSM/JDL, WAM

RELATING TO ELECTRONIC MONITORING.

Appropriates funds to the department of public safety and the judiciary for the purpose of electronic monitoring of released inmates. ESPERO, KEITH-AGARAN, Galuteria

This bill would provide funding to DPS to put more people on electronic monitoring. The good part is that people will be released and monitored in the community. If we asked the legislature to appropriate funding for 300 monitors for community and minimum custody individuals who have shown that they can safely be in the community, that would be 300 less people incarcerated. A good start. Another option we will mention in CAP testimony is COMMUNITY PLACEMENT for those who are monitored by a community-based program for services and support.

RELATING TO IDENTIFICATION.

Appropriates funds for providing civil identification cards for inmates upon request prior to their release.

This bill is incredibly important since the department has been promising to do this for almost 10 years! CAP is in STRONG SUPPORT of helping individuals make the transition from institutional to community life.
